At the beginning of 2012 Turkish total merchant fleet consists of 1.561 ships with a combined tonnage of nearly nine million DWT. This makes Turkey number 18 on the list of countries with the world’s largest commercial fleets. Three quarters of the merchant fleet was built in Turkey. Dry cargo ships, oil and chemical tankers are traditionally built in Turkey and less imported from abroad. This also applies to fishing vessels. By contrast, only twenty percent of the bulk carriers are built in Turkey and the RO-RO vessels are mostly built abroad. The Turkish merchant fleet is dominated by dry cargo vessels and bulk carriers. Together, these two types of vessels account for two-thirds of the total DWT. Also, the oil tankers deliver a significant contribution to the merchant fleet.
